THE MEANING OF A POW-WOW

A powwow has a meaning that run deep into the roots of Native American cultural traditions and practices, In our approach to Indigenous Indian life being descendants of The First World People of the Western Hemisphere!

A powwow is always basic in Indian Ethics and Indian Logic. A powwow constitutes in the context of community and Indian Government Conferences Councils and Deliberations of solving difficulties and problems in the community and government of our people.

As a community of chiefs Klan Mother’s and learns Elders. We represent-a-Government! The reason I am saying community before government is because basically as Native Americans we are agricultural people who have an Affinity with Mother Earth! Therefore we build Government from the ground up! From Community! In ancient times whenever a community of Indians was confronted a problem they gathered around a large fire prepared some food and deliberated. This meant a powwow was called into action!

To come to a powwow is to powwow by your presence at the gathering! The presence of each one of us makes up the powwow. The word powwow belongs to Native American culture and tradition. The word powwow found a place a place in the English language not only as a noun, which mean a person, place, thing or idea! But the word powwow is a verb! A verb is a word that expresses action mode being condition or state. The word powwow is a noun but as a verb to powwow mean to participate in such gathering. Such gathering is common to Indians generally!

In the Native American tradition of a powwow gathering, the medicine men and women are called upon to do what they could to solve difficulties in the Indian community.

Our powwow is educational. We educate you on what a powwow means in Native American History and how we relate to a powwow today. As Indians, our way of life is good SCIENCE FOR ALL PEOPLE! Our way of life is good for the world and in SAVING MOTHER EARTH! WHY?

The answer is because the Native Americans way of life is the way of peace! A powwow always serves the whole of the Indian community. If a food shortage were a serious matter it would lead to a powwow of deliberation to solve a food shortage problem. In the course of a powwow for the aim and purpose of which a powwow was called, there would be a speaking and discussion interspersed with prayers dancing and singing! A powwow then refers to an Indian community in action trying to solve its current problems.

The powwow might continue for days before a decision was reached, Any crisis or any major difficulty would be met with a powwow gathering and deliberations, This meant a situation would be scrutinized in detail. The Native Americans were always a conference minded people! A council minded people that powwow upon a situation a gathering before some course of action would be decided. The re-gathering of our history as descendants of the original people of the Western Hemisphere is a powwow for us!

There is art oral tradition of our history passed on from our Elders and learned people of Native American culture and traditions. Our history is important to us as natives because the untold story of the Native Americans history here in the Western Hemisphere is the essence of who we are!

Many Native Americans are putting on powwows nowadays! Without meaning! Once we as Native Americans understand the scope and true meaning of a powwow we must work and come together and put on the annual Great North American powwow! The greatest Native American powwow the World has ever seen! It is in our power to bring the great powwow to pass making the First Great North American powwow a Reality!

As descendent of the original people of North America we have even right to do so here in the land of our ancestry, our homeland and county! (I am Shaman Ceremony Red Deer) ceremonial Chief of the Cherokee Blackfeet cultural circle of New York City.

I am working to help bring to pass the (great powwow) on this Continent! Once this is accomplished, this will serve as a new grand achievement for Native Americans! But in order for the Native Americans here in the Western Hemisphere to work towards a great annual powwow of all the nations tribes kinders and tongues to establish the great powwow.

First we must have a powwow of (PEACE) among all natives to bring our people into such understanding. The path to bring our people to that understanding is the Indian path of peace that has its origin from the great spirit of peace.

Remember we are the descendants of the original people of this Western Hemisphere — we are a First World People! And we must celebrate our greatness in honor of the great spirit of our people in honor of Father Sky and Mother Earth herself.

The reason Native Americans must know Native American history is our great history is the guide post that will guide us away from being on the wrong side of history now and in the future! To be on the wring side of history today is to he robbed of our future as Native Americans! And our Heritage! I say whose American? By whose name? This alone is worth a powwow. Explanation! The history of whose America! Name by who is important! Why? This might send shock waves through many of our people.

But as Native Americans in a new day, it is our duty to return the land of our home back to its Indian name! I am sorry United States of America! The United States of America will just have to be a people in the Indians country under an Indian name! And Flag! This is one of our approaches to (reparations) of repairing the damage done for approximately 600 years to the indigenous owners of the county’s rightful name!

This is the language the Chiefs must begin speaking today! Nowadays, we say Native Americans! But in the future the name America hat has been placed upon us will have to give way to our Asiatic roots of our native ness! As Indians here in the Western Hemisphere, we have a beautiful history, let us as Indians not abandon our history because our beautiful past is pointing to a beautiful future. A new day is coming for the Indians!

Our country has been named out of it’s Indian for approximately 600 years! Named after one who never sets foot on this continent! I am talking about Amerigo Vespucci! The name America is derived from his name. He was not of Indian descent He was an Italian born in Florence, Italy on March 9, 1451, He was a major pilot of the Spanish Marine. He traveled much and wrote plentifully about the ancient Western Hemisphere of the Indians without identifying our Continent with a definite name. A geographer some 56 years later by the name of Martin Waldseemuller is who suggested our Continent be named America. Finally, in I in the University of (St Dio) it was decided to name the Western Hemisphere America! In honor not of natives, but in honor of Amerigo Vespucci. As a native people of this Western Hemisphere, we have suffered this insult for approximately 600 years! It is time for a change on this matter; a name of a country must mean much more than meets the eye!
